I am a big Disney fan, always have been and probably always will be.
However, what concerns me over the last few years is the apparent decline in
the availability of quality merchandise in factor some really cheap junk. I
know that this is not really Disney's fault, no-doubt having to react to
today's market and public demand. Yet, is the general public really that
stupid and/or uneducated, where shops such as One-of-a-Kind Antiques, the
Gourmet Store, a much bigger book selection in the World of Disney,
collectible Madame Alexander dolls, just to name a few, gave way in favor to
some really cheap Disney trinkets, and on everything from the Nightmare
Before Christmas to Grumpy "T" shirts. Now I am well aware that currently
this is what is selling, and obviously what the public wants. But, I though
the general public was suppose to get smarter and more sophisticated over
time, not seemingly going down hill.
I guess another example would be Disney's California Adventure itself. While
it started out designed as more of an upscale park for adults, with some
really nice and high-end restaurants, it has quickly changed to the cheap
step-child of Disneyland, in the need of some kiddy rides, and again, more
cheap merchandise. Of course, the bottom line is attendance and number of
dollars, so Disney obviously needed to cater to what the public wants. Yet,
even Disney missed this to begin with, for seemingly their initial market
studies showed that an upscale park, with higher-end restaurants and
merchandise would work. As we all know, it didn't.
Now don't get me wrong. I look forward to the changes being made in DCA. I
just wish that some of the older stores with some of the really good
merchandise had remained. Let others shop around for that Mickey Mouse
coffee cup, I'm still looking for the good stuff.
